INTEL - NEW TECHNOLOGY IMPLEMENTATION

  • THE CHALLENGE

Intel's AR on-the-job support solution (DAQRI) shutdown and they needed a replacement.

Intel had multiple sites around the globe that needed training and support to not just understand how to use the new replacement technology, but also how to best integrate the new solutions into their existing workflows.

  • THE SOLUTION

I designed a succinct curriculum around the new technologies. (The Microsoft HoloLens 2 mixed reality headset and two applications: Dynamics 365 Guides, and Dynamics 365 Remote Assist.)

I led global training classes consisting of virtual instructor led (VILT) sessions via Microsoft Teams and hands-on, self-paced practice covering the what, why, and how.

After the training, users were able to explain how to best utilize the new solutions to enhance their daily workflows and develop new content using the software.

  • THE IMPACT

Rapid adoption of the new technologies.
Intel developed 100 Guides modules in the first month, and 500 after three months.

Intel is currently one of Microsoft's largest HoloLens and Dynamics 365 Guides adopters.

THE PROCESS

TELL ME - Power Point and Teams

A standard virtual instructor-led training affair, though I always try to make my trainings a discussion and a 2-way street. Key discussion topics included: Pros/Cons of the previous technology, how to improve upon the previous solution and not just translate it to the new one, and how to make the most of the mixed reality medium.

SHOW ME - Demonstrate from the HoloLens 2 and
its authoring software

The best way to communicate something is often to show it, this is especially the case with AR/VR/MR. The core of the training happens when I'm engaging the class live from the HoloLens and authoring software. Questions and ideas start flowing and I can really show how training and task competition can be enhanced. I can also act as the group’s avatar and let them try and walk me through the situation and learn what works and what doesn't.

First, each attendee was given the task of going through a Guides module from the perspective of a frontline worker. The purpose of this exercise was to help them get familiar with the experience and develop empathy for the learner and worker. Once they completed a task from the perspective of a worker, they were then assigned to make a new module from scratch using a sample procedure.

To help maintain interest and continuously enhance their skills, we scheduled follow-up touch-in sessions at regular cadence. In these subsequent training sessions, we discussed what was easy, what was hard or unclear, and compared notes as a group. I believe it was these in-the-weeds discussions that really prepared the group to hit the ground running and set pace for longevity.
