VARIAN - RADIATION THERAPIST VR TRAINING

  • THE CHALLENGE

Students had to travel on site to get hands-on with the large, expensive radiation therapy equipment.

Some students and workers would not be able to get hands on with equipment until day one of the job and did not have time to practice.

  • THE SOLUTION

We developed a full VR simulation of the treatment room and equipment and shipped Meta Quest 2 headsets out to students so they could take the training remotely and get hands-on with the equipment and learn the procedures.

The simulation covered equipment training, patient interaction, and software training.

  • THE IMPACT

The success of the project paved the way for VR as an effective training platform and made a way to provide hands-on training without a site visit or physical access to the machine.

    Resulting in:

    Increased safety
    Reduced machine downtime
    Increased student throughput

Treatment Room and Equipment

We created a scale, fully simulated treatment room with the VARIAN TrueBeam radiation therapy system and its peripheral controls.

Using the Meta Quest controllers, we simulated what it felt like to use the machine.

Control Room Software Simulation Training

We made sure to simulate the entire experience 1:1 with what it would be like to be present and in-person. This includes walking to the control room and setting up the patient in the software on a desktop.

Simple Checklist Instructions

Floating instructions and a checklist walk students through the procedure and provide additional information.

Even if someone was brand new, they could explore and learn the system, or follow clear step-by-step instructions to help them complete each procedure.
